Hi! My name is Kai Lewin, and I’m a junior at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego. I’m hoping to major in anthropology in college, specifically focusing on the cultural and linguistic side of things.
I got interested in anthropology because I’ve lived in Italy my whole life. Being immersed in a culture that’s different from my American background made me notice things—like how language actually changes the way people think, or how the same situation can mean completely different things depending on where you are. It got me asking questions: Why do cultures work so differently? What shapes the way societies function?
From what I’ve learned so far, cultural and linguistic anthropology is all about understanding human diversity—how we communicate, build communities, and see the world through different cultural lenses. It’s all about understanding why societies function the way they do and how language serves as both a bridge and a barrier between people.
I love that anthropology allows me to explore these questions systematically while also bringing my own perspective and interpretations to the field. I created this blog to share the articles, documentaries, and ideas I encounter in my exploration of anthropology, using a student’s perspective and to think critically about the cultural questions that shape our societies. Hope you enjoy!
